How to Claim Preference Points

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

Review the categories above to determine which preference points you may be eligible for.

Step 2: Gather Documentation

Collect official documentation for each preference category you’re claiming:

  • DD-214 for veteran preference
  • Proof of residency (driver’s license, lease, utility bill)
  • Official transcripts for education preference
  • Certification cards/certificates (certified copies)

Step 3: Submit with Application

Important Information

Maximum Points

There may be a maximum number of total preference points that can be awarded to any single candidate. Check current hiring announcements for specific limits.

Documentation Required

You MUST provide official documentation for all claimed preference points. Claims without proper documentation will not be honored.

Timing

Preference points are typically applied AFTER all testing is complete. They are added to your total score to determine final ranking on the eligibility list.

Changes to Policy

Preference point policies are subject to change based on departmental needs, collective bargaining agreements, and applicable laws. Always refer to the current job posting for the most up-to-date information.

Non-Transferable

Preference points apply only to the specific recruitment for which you apply. They do not carry over to future recruitments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim multiple preference point categories?

Yes, you may claim all preference categories for which you are eligible, subject to any maximum point limits.

What if I’m working on a degree or certification?

Preference points are only awarded for completed degrees and current, valid certifications. “In progress” does not qualify.

Do preference points guarantee I’ll be hired?

No. Preference points improve your ranking but do not guarantee employment. You must still successfully complete all phases of the hiring process and rank competitively on the eligibility list.

Can I submit preference point documentation after my application?

Documentation deadlines are specified in job postings. Generally, documentation should be submitted with your application or by the stated deadline. Late submissions may not be accepted.

What if I move to West Dundee after applying?

Residency is typically determined as of the application deadline. Moving after that date may not qualify you for residency preference for that recruitment.
